Getting the message from a past bride that she is expecting their first child is just as exciting as getting the call that they are engaged! Welcoming your first child or fourth child is an life event to call your favorite photographer (ME!) to document this time. When Jincey and Ryan messaged me and invited me into their home to mark this special time last Winter I was over the moon with joy. Meeting the little guy that was a serious highlight to my Winter and boy was he ready to take some newborn photos.
Photographing a family in their home environment is so different than when I photograph a family at a park or somewhere like that. For one, I always take my shoes off when I enter someone’s home, haha. Plus, you really get a feel for the family as a whole. Like behind Jincey and Ryan there are photographs I took of their wedding. After a wedding is complete and the couple receives their wedding package from me I always wonder if they hang their wedding photographs. I hope and pray they do, but you never know because life does get busy.
The home advantage, specifically with a newborn, is the ability to adapt quickly and feel comfortable. Your home is a controlled environment. We don’t have to fight the wind, or find shade if the sun is just too bright. We can change rooms, shirts, outfits and stop for feedings if needed. You have the ability to make the room hotter or colder.
There is no right way or wrong way to document your family. There is only the way that feels like you as a family. I personally specialize in lifestyle which is what this newborn session is. Like wedding photography it allows me to step back and capture the interaction, the emotion. Of course, I always stop to pose and capture the traditional shots, but the quiet moments, the moments where you are just “being” are my absolute favorite! These are the moments that people call “fleeting”. These are the moments that make the memories. The memories you trust in me to capture, to hang on your wall, to share with friends and family.
Which ever style of family documenting you go with make sure it fits your family dynamic. Photographs tell the story you want it to tell… it be calm and quiet or excited and full of energy. It can be a combination of both! Your photographer can help pick the right location, time and place for the type of photography session you want.
It was so amazing to catch up with these two and meet Luke! I can’t thank them enough for inviting me into their home and sharing their new journey with me. There is no doubt in my mind that this little guy has the best parents out there. Here is to hoping they pick me to capture more milestones in his life. In the meantime, grow little one grow! We will catch up soon!
